PAPILLION, NE – Sarpy County authorities say a man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a bank robbery in Papillion Saturday afternoon. According to the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office Eric Dickerson walked into the Shadow Lake First National Bank Branch at 12:30 p.m. intending to rob the bank.

Michael Bergner was working nearby. He saw the robber leave the bank and watched another man chase the getaway car.

“I was taking out the trash and I saw this car just speeding off that way and I don't think much of it,” said Bergner. “Then a car followed him. The driver came in afterwards and said he was an off-duty cop trying to follow the guy.”

Sarpy County authorities confirmed an off-duty police officer tipped them off while the bank triggered its silent alarm. They say Dickerson ditched the car and ran through a field near 48th street and Cornhusker. Nearby neighbors Toni and Bob Kenger said he took the long route.

“I saw there were like fifteen police cars down there,” said Bob Kenger.

Kenger’s wife, Toni said the couple watched the commotion from their yard.

“[The suspect] was clear on 370, down 36 and he was all over. He drove all over,” Toni Kenger said. “I said, 'I'm going to lock the back door because we don't know if there's one or two they're looking for or what they're looking for so we locked the doors.'"

Authorities tracked down Dickerson in a field. They say he shot himself with a .22-caliber rifle as they approached. He died early Sunday from the gunshot wound.

“I couldn't believe it happened in broad daylight though, right at noon,” Bergner said. “I'm worried over here though, because if they're going to rob a bank out here, what makes my job safe?”
