Omaha, NE - For years the Benson-Ames area got a bad rep, but over the past decade that image has started to change.
The people who live there are determined to keep it that way.
"There's a lot of positive things going on in the Benson-Ames area," said Elizabeth Donner, 'The Indie' race director. "We just wanted to enhance it."
On Saturday, the Benson area came together to promote their ever-growing neighborhood.
Benson resident of ten years Mary Pat Johnson runs the farmers market.
She has watched this community change for the better.
"I want them to know we are a vibrant, sustaining, good place to be all the time," said Johnson.
Saturday's main event was called 'The Indie.'
Omaha By Design and the Benson-Ames Alliance partnered for the first of its kind event.
It started with 200 runners taking the streets early to run a 5k and then, it was all about business.
"We really felt like this would really be something that would be able to enhance all of the positive things that are already taking place," said Donner. "We felt like it would be an opportunity to bring people in that maybe have not been here before."
The run turned into a walking tour of Benson.
With coupon books in hand, hundreds of people stayed to check out Benson bars and restaurants.
The food, the fun and the farmers market also spread the good vibes.
Johnson said these are the events that will continue to make a difference in the image and the community.
"If you're looking to find anything to do or have fun with, Benson is the place to be," she said.
All of the proceeds from 'The Indie' will go to beautification projects in Benson Park and Fontenelle Park.
