Jack Hoffman stays strong in his cancer battle

By Jennifer Griswold. CREATED Aug 11, 2014

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - Eight-year-old Jack Hoffman is just days away from starting third grade. His summer has brought ups and downs.

The Atkinson boy talks fondly about his visit to see former Husker Rex Burkhead and the Bengals take on the Kansas City Chiefs last week.

Jack describes seeing Rex as really fun. "After the game I saw him, and I said good job. And I saw him before the game too."

Along with life's highs, this summer has brought unwanted lows as well.

A recent doctor appointment in Boston revealed Jack's brain tumor had grown. Jack says he feels fine.

Jack's mom Bri said the news wasn't what they were expecting, however, they also knew it was a possibility, "the doctors told us from the beginning with this type of tumor, even if you can get it to stabilize there was a better than 50 percent chance that it would start growing again."

She says they're now weighing their options for his next treatment. "One of them is a clinical trial which we're strongly considering which targets a specific mutation that's in his brain tumor. It's a newer drug."

Jack Hoffman has become the poster child for pediatric brain cancer awareness. His mom says the attention and support have been overwhelming, and they are incredibly grateful. They say they decided they would take the media attention and run with it to help the cause. They believe that's what God intended them to do.

The Team Jack Foundation has raised more than 1.1 million dollars and counting for pediatric brain cancer research and awareness.

Jack and Bri Hoffman stopped by our studios today to help promote The Omaha Marathon. KMTV Action 3 News is proud to be the media sponsor of The Omaha Marathon, and the marathon recognizes the Team Jack Foundation as the official charity for the 2014 marathon.

The Omaha Marathon is Sunday, September 21st. There are options to run a mile all the way up to a marathon. If you'd like to read more about the Omaha Marathon, click here
