OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - Think back to your first car and how safe – or unsafe – it might’ve been.

A new report from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety aims to help parents pick out a safe used vehicle for new teen drivers.

Twenty eight percent of 500 parents surveyed said they bought a small or minicar for their teen driver, according to the Institute.

In that same survey, a little more than half said their teen’s car from was from 2006 or older.

Small and older vehicles aren’t the best options for safety, the Institute says.

They recommend lower horsepower, bigger models, electronic stability control, and high safety ratings.

The Institute put out two lists one for used vehicles under $20,000 and another for less than $10,000:

The top vehicles under $20,000 were: Saab 9-5 sedan, Toyota Prius V, Honda CR-V, Volvo XC60 and Buick Enclave.

The top vehicles under $10,000 were: Acura RL, Subaru Legacy, Nissan Rogue, Mazda Cx-9, Volkswagon Routan.

Check out both complete lists here.
