Best viewing for Perseid meteor shower is Tuesday night
OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) –Stargazers – Tuesday night, marks the peak time of the annual Perseid meteor shower.
Meteor rates are expected to be about 30 to 40 per hour.
Once it gets dark, if you drive away from the city lights, you should see meteors most anywhere in the sky - but the best viewing times will be between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., so you might want to set your alarm clocks.
The Perseids are usually one of the best meteor shows of the year. It certainly is the oldest with records in Chinese annals going back 2000 years.
Each year at this time the Earth passes through the debris of the comet Swift-Tuttle. The particles, passing through the earth's atmosphere at thousands of miles per hour, burn up sometimes creating fire balls. Many of the particles may be no bigger than a grain of sand. Enjoy the show.
