OTOE COUNTY, NE - A jury returned a guilty verdict in the case against a             72-year-old retired teacher.

Gene Schoemann was found guilty on one felony count of Third Degree Sexual Assualt of a Child.  Schoemann taught math and coached for more than 30 years in the Conestoga Public School system.

Schoemann testified in his own defense for more than two hours, saying he was working as a Walmart greeter in Nebraska City when he met the victim and his family.  After developing a relationship with the family over time as they visited the store, Schoemann began tutoring the victim in February.

Prosecutors said the tutoring turned into golf lessons and weight lifting at the defendant's home, where in May of 2012, Schoemann subjected the 12-year-old to sexual contact.

The jury deliberated a little more than two hours last Thursday before returning a guilty verdict.  A judge will sentence Schoemann on April 22.  In addition to facing up to five years in prison, Schoemann will have to register as a sex offender.  Schoemann remains free on bond and has been ordered to have no contact with anyone under the age of 18.
