Bomb Threats Evacuate Nine County Courthouses

Cass County, NE - Multiple agencies searched courthouses in nine counties Friday after someone called in bomb threats. The calls were made to courthouses in Cass, Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Lancaster, Otoe, Richardson, Saline and Seward counties.  The threats disrupted court business Friday morning and afternoon.

The courthouses, all in the eastern and southeastern part of the state, had to be evacuated.  Authorities and a bomb-sniffing dog from Offutt Air Force Base swept the Cass County Courthouse and came up empty.  All the calls came in between 11:06 and 11:36 Friday morning.  Lancaster County reported a male caller saying, “A bomb will be exploding in 17 minutes".

The Cass County Sheriff's Office took the threat seriously. "You've got to take each situation on its own merit.  I'm sure when we get all done and get our reports together, and everybody gets together we'll probably review what our procedures are," said Chief Deputy Brad Lahm.

So far it's not clear exactly what the caller was trying to target by placing these threats at courthouses in mostly rural counties.

"There's a wacko out there is what I think," said Plattsmouth resident Kelly Kindelin.  "Either they're an attention getter or they have a serious mental problem or something like that. Hopefully they get help."

The Nebraska State Patrol says none of these threats turned out to be credible and no one was hurt.  NSP is also asking you to contact your local law enforcement if you have any information on who's behind these threats.

Making a bomb threat in Nebraska is a Class IV Felony and can carry up to a five year prison sentence and a $10,000 fine.
