Inmate Dies One Day After Arrest
Omaha, NE - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is investigating the sudden death of a 27-year-old inmate.
Michelle Leuze was found unresponsive in her cell early Monday morning, and later pronounced dead at Creighton University Medical Center. Now, new clues are surfacing that may give some indication why she might have died.
"When she was brought in, she told booking officers she was high," said Marty Bilek with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
Lueze is no stranger to the law. Authorities arrested her in Midtown Sunday night on two counts of missing a court date and for possession of drug-related items. The Sheriff's Office tells KMTV Action 3 News when corrections staff learned she was high they frequently checked on her throughout the night, but at one point she became unresponsive.
"CPR was performed in an attempt to save her life," said Bilek.
Though it's still early in the investigation, Bilek says an autopsy has already been done.
"There was no sign of foul play."
The Sheriff's Office tells KMTV Action 3 News it will continue to investigate the circumstances behind Lueze's death. That could take at least another three days or possibly even weeks. A grand jury will also look into any wrongdoing.
