15- and 3-Month-Olds Surrounded By Cockroaches

Omaha, NE - A 3-month--old girl and her 15-month-old brother have been living in a house infested with cockroaches.

Police removed the infants from the house near 44th and Pratt after a Child Protective Services asked them to check on the children there. Officers say in a police report they were familiar with the conditions at the home. They'd been there six days earlier and warned the mother to clean it up.

The first visit, police described dirty conditions, with "cockroaches visible in the sink."

Their second visit, officers say "conditions were the same, with cockroaches in every room, including where the kids slept and in the bathroom sink." They also described bathtubs "that were unuseable for bathing," and food and trash sitting out in the open.

The 25-year-old mother--Jessica McKnelly--was cited for two counts of child neglect. The babies were placed with an aunt.

This is the second incident this week where very young children were found in cockroach-infested homes. Monday, a two-week-old girl was placed in foster care after officers found several piles of cat feces and cockroaches in every room of the house she was living in near 29th and Nicholas. Police reports say there was "no walking space, no sitting space" and no dishes for eating.

Six cats were placed with the Nebraska Humane Society and the 20-year-old mother was cited for child neglect.
