Teen dies after pushing girlfriend off train tracks

Mickayla Friend, 16, is in critical condition after her boyfriend pushed her out of the way of a train around 7 p.m. on March 21. The train struck both teens. The unidentified boy was killed on impact.

"You can't imagine getting the worst call in your life, knowing that you just dropped your sister off to go to a dance that was supposed to be a special, amazing night for her and her boyfriend of a year," Friend's sister Alithya tells KCRA. "And then you get a call that says he's deceased and she's in critical condition."

Friend and her boyfriend were allegedly walking on the tracks to a local Dollar Tree to pick up food before their Sadie Hawkins dance at Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts in Marysville, Calif.

People attending a nearby baseball game witnessed the horrifying incident. "The engineer was on the horn," says eyewitness Sean Stark. "Then finally, they both looked back at the same time. They would have both been underneath that train if he didn't push her out of the way at the last second."

Railroad company Union Pacific is currently investigating, as Friend remains in critical condition at Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
