Investigators wore hazmat suits and respirator masks as they removed hundreds of living and dead snakes from a home in suburban Santa Ana, Calif., they dubbed “house of horrors.”
Local school teacher William Buchman, 53, was arrested Jan. 29 and is facing animal neglect charges. Authorities say he lived in the home alone, and operated a snake breeding business.
Neighbors say the odor in the unventilated home became unbearable about five months ago, and could be smelled from the sidewalk.
According to police the snakes were kept in plastic bins that filled up four entire bedrooms, stacked floor to ceiling. In addition to the reptiles, authorities say the house was also infested with rats and mice.
