Developing story: School shooting in Colorado

By Phyllis Stark. CREATED Dec 13, 2013

Update: CNN is reporting that the gunman, a male student at the school, has apparently killed himself. ABC affiliate 7 News reports that two other students were shot. Sheriff Grayson Robinson told 7 News the incident began at 12:33 p.m. when the shooter, armed with a shotgun, began looking for a specific teacher. A student confronted the gunman, was shot, and is now in serious condition. The second student who was shot has minor injuries. The teacher was safely escorted from the school. Authorities know the gunman's identity, but are not yet releasing it.

Original story: Multiple media sources are reporting that at least two people have been injured in a shooting Friday at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colo. Sheriff Grayson Robinson told CNN affiliate KMGH that the shooter is believed to still be inside the school.

MSNBC is describing an "active shooter situation" at the school, located in Denver suburb. NBC affiliate KUSA reported one teen victim was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound.
CNN says "dozens of children could be seen walking away from the school, with their hands in the air. Some stood in lines at what appeared the high school track field, where they appeared to be undergoing police pat-downs." Outside the school, police blocked roads leading to the campus.
Conflicting reports say parents of Arapahoe students are being advised to go to a local grocery store or a local church to pick up their children. The school has a population of 2,229 students.
All schools in the system have been put on lock down, authorities told CNN.
The Arapahoe High School incident occurred a day before the first anniversary of the mass shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. MSNBC reports Arapahoe High School is a 15-minute drive from Columbine High School, the scene of a deadly shooting in 1999 in which two students took the lives of 12 other students and one teacher.
Today's shooting occurred just one day after Arapahoe County Sheriff Robinson announced plans to retire at the end of the year, after more than 42 years of service.
