CATHEDRAL CITY - Since its opening in April, Xceleration Indoor Kart Racing on Date Palm Drive has attracted a lot of customers, but this weekend, it left a lot of customers unhappy.
"Saturday we had an event planned for our employees and showed up to a door that stated temporarily closed," explained Elizabeth Maxfield from Southwest Pump and Drilling in Coachella, "I had planned food catered in, went out and bought gifts and everything for the kids. People were driving from all areas of southern California."
Maxfield booked a private party weeks in advance for their end-of-the-year company celebration, but the 50 guests never got to race.
"To have it happen during the holidays, it was the worst time that it could ever happen at all," said Maxfield.
On Monday, the owner of Xceleration released a statement apologizing for the inconvenience to their customers and for the last-minute cancellations over the weekend. In the statement, it said that the company is undergoing negotiations over the lease of its building.
"We were under the impression that during these negotiations, our doors would remain open. Due to this switch up, we had private parties scheduled over the weekend and during December (total of 18) that have to be cancelled if we can't get this situation solved," read the statement.
The company will reimburse the affected parties in full and will be "fully comping them a party once our doors are back open."
"It was Saturday at 12:56 p.m. when the email came through, and our party was supposed to be a 12 on Saturday...apologizing saying that they had some problems and that they would be happy to refund my money," said Maxfield.
She is satisfied with the refund, but she said it's not just about the money, but about how the company handled the notice.
"If I were running a business like theirs, and I couldn't get in contact with somebody who had a party that day that I would have actually had a representative at the facility standing outside to let them know once they showed up," said Maxfield, "But that didn't happen unfortunately."
It's unclear when the company will reopen, but the owner said they are hoping to reach some kind of resolution in the coming days.
As far as Maxfield, she was able to move her holiday party on Saturday to a nearby bowling alley after she found out Xceleration was closed.
