COACHELLA VALLEY - One of the biggest changes in 2014 that will affect millions of Americans is the Affordable Care Act. any insurance plans set up under the new health law come with low premiums and high deductibles.

If you're thinking of signing up for health insurance under Covered California, you have until January 15 for the coverage to kick-in February 1.
In labor laws, the minimum wage will increase from $8 to $9 per hour in July 2014. Also, in-home domestic workers such as housekeepers and senior care givers will be entitled to overtime pay if they work more than nine hours a day or 45 hours a week.
In schools, transgender students will be allowed to choose which restrooms they use and which sports to participate in based on their gender identity.
On the road, drivers will have to keep at least three feet clear from cyclists when passing them. If drivers don't follow the new rule, they'll face fines. 
Teen drivers under the age of 18 will be prohibited from using any hands-free electronic devices while driving.
In the service industry, automatic gratuities for large groups could be a thing of the past. 
The Internal Revenue Service will require restaurants to treat gratuities as service charges rather than tips. This means waiters will no longer be able to take automatic tips home with them and will see that money until their paycheck.
In the United States Postal Service, first-class stamps will increase to 49 cents, that'll be three cents more than now. This is meant to be a temporary two-year increase in order to recover more than $2 billion in losses.
If you buy traditional lightbulbs, you'll be out of luck when you hit the stores in 2014. Manufacturing of 60 and 40-watt incandescent light bulbs will be banned, and you no longer will see them on the shelves.
Expect to see many of these laws go into effect on January 1 and others later this year.
