PALM SPRINGS - More than 10,000 motorcycles and riders from across the nation are expected in the Coachella Valley this weekend for the annual American Heat Motorcycle Rally.
The majority of the gatherings are centered in downtown Palm Springs, on Palm Canyon Drive, from Tahquitz Canyon Way to Ramon Road.
The weekend includes races, live music, and retail vendors, with part of the proceeds benefiting local charities, according to the event website.
Police across the desert are also out in force. A spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff's Department says extra patrols are on duty for public safety reasons.
"It's just as we would for an event like Coachella or Stagecoach [music festivals]", the spokesman, who requested not to go on camera, told KMIR.
