By Gitzel Puente. CREATED Jan 21, 2014

PALM SPRINGS - As of 8 p.m. Wednesday, 16 units remain in the dark at the Sunrise Villas, according to a representative from Southern California Edison.

Power should be back on by 7  a.m., but only temporarily.

Crews are replacing damaged cables. The work is expected to take at least two more days.

About 1,300 residents were without power Tuesday afternoon due to several structural fires at Sunrise Villas, according to Southern California Edison.

Five homes were damaged, and nobody was reported injured.

The Palm Springs Fire Department received a call of an explosion and gas line break around 1:14 p.m. Other agencies on scene were CalFire, Cathedral City Fire Department, Southern California Edison and The Gas Company.

Fire officials escorted residents back into their damaged homes after a thorough inspection. No one was displaced.

Traffic signals were out during the power outage and resulted in several road closures including Mesquite Avenue between Sunrise and Farrell.

The fire department is investigating the root cause of the fires.
