Rice weighs in on travel troubles, playing on ESPN

By Paul Gerke. CREATED Dec 10, 2013

It was a long night and early morning for the Boise State basketball team. The Broncos' flight to Lexington was cancelled because of inclement weather, and the team had to take a bus from Chicago Monday night. They arrived at the Lexington Hyatt at 1:15am.

"We were comfortable, we had some food. We only had to eat one freshman," laughed head coach Leon Rice. "It went okay. We just don't let it be a factor. It's happened before and we've dealt with it. It's not going to affect the way we play or our approach to the game."

The Broncos (8-0) are one of just 15 undefeated teams left in the country. Their Tuesday opponent, the 11th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats, lost to Baylor on Friday.

"Coach (Calipari) always has his team ready regardless, whether it's a win or a loss," detailed Rice. "He's a veteran, he knows what he's doing, and he knows what he's doing with freshmen. I wasn't going to underestimate that whether it was a win or a loss."

Tuesday will be the first time Boise State and Kentucky meet. BSU is 1-3 all-time against SEC schools, with the one win coming last year over LSU. Tuesday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN. Boise State hasn't played on ESPN since the Big West Championship in 1999.

"When we took over this program, we wanted to play in these big games," said Rice. "We want to play on the big stage. Our guys want that. The opportunity is there for them, and now they have to go out there and perform."
