Positive Parenting: Cost of Day Care

By Robyn Greene. CREATED Nov 6, 2013

It cost $241,000 to raise a child for 18 years. And one of the biggest expeses: day care.

In fact, in some parts of the country, the annual cost of infant and child care is more than college tuition.

A new study from Child Care Aware of America breaks down the cost of day care...be warned!

In 31 states, day care costs more than college at a public university. But how much more depends on where you live.

Families in the midwest and south pay the least: $15,000 to $17,000 dollars a year for two kids. In the northeast and west, parents pay $18,000 to $22,000 a year.

So why the big difference?

One of the big reasons is the cost of living.

Day care is cheapest in the south and midwest because pretty much everything else is cheapest there, too. Another factor is state regulations.

So how does Idaho stack up?

Our state just changed the rules for day cares. Right now any provider with at least seven children has to be licenced. And the number of children that one person can take care of depends on the child's age. At most, one adult can watch six infants at a time, and that number increases as the children get older.
