United Dairymen of Idaho celebrates Ice Cream Month

By Spencer Blake. CREATED Jul 25, 2014

Making ice cream at home is so much easier than it was when you were a kid.  You don't have to have the rock salt, ice, and hand crank.  With frozen bowls, you can have your ice cream ready in about half an hour.  Cindy Miller from United Dairymen of Idaho showed Good Morning Idaho an easy recipe for vanilla ice cream.

• 3/4 cup granulated sugar
• 1 cup of your favorite Idaho whole milk (substitute 1 cup of plain yogurt for a tangier, healthier version)
• 2 cups heavy cream
• 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
• 1 pinch of salt
• Any extra ingredients such as nuts, chocolate chips and other candy

• Whisk sugar and salt into the milk until dissolved. Stir in the cream and vanilla (or other ingredients, like mint extract).  Put mixture in an airtight container and chill in the fridge for at least one hour.  For our ice cream maker, we put the bowl in the freezer for 12-16 hours to make sure it’s frozen solid.  After assembling the machine, simply turn it on, pour the mixture in and wait patiently, (if being patient is even possible).  Mix in the ice cream maker for 15 to 20 minutes, until the ice cream has a soft creamy texture

5 or 10 minutes before the ice cream is done, mix in Strawberries or blueberries (or any other toppings you will be adding) so they get thoroughly mixed in.  The ice cream will have the consistency of soft serve. If you like your ice cream a little harder, or if there are any leftovers, simply put it in a freezer-safe container and keep in the freezer (take out of freezer 15 minutes prior to serving

National Ice Cream Month began in 1984 during the Reagan Administration.  The month celebrates dairy industry contributions to fresh, nutritious and delicious products.  Here in Idaho, we have access to various locally-produced ice cream or, we can make it at home with just a few ingredients

The United Dairymen of Idaho are partnering with the FFA to sell ice cream at the Canyon County Fair, which runs from July 24-27.
