Shoppers splurge on Small Business Saturday by staying local

Small businesses across the country received lots of attention Saturday, as shoppers gearing up for the holiday season took part in Small Business Saturday.

“I always enjoy shopping more at small boutiques and finding something that’s a little bit different,” Tammy Feldman said.

Feldman visits Boise every Thanksgiving from Michigan and makes it tradition to stop by American Clothing Gallery in downtown Boise every year.

“She just carries things that I don’t see anywhere else,” Feldman said. ““Every time we come out here, actually the one thing that we never miss is that we come shopping at Lil’s. I always get a pair of gloves, usually a scarf, a sweater, and sometimes I buy so much that she has to ship it home to me!”

The store has been centrally located in downtown Boise for 15 years. It’s the store’s only location and attracts regular customers.

“We are so unique,” store owner Lil Kurek said. “I don’t buy merchandise anyone else in town has. I don’t carry 10,000 of anything- I carry three which makes it just a little bit more special.”

It’s that uniqueness that keeps customers coming back.

“She remembers us! We only come once a year and she always remembers us,” Feldman said. “She just makes the store; it’s something we look forward to every year.”

Keeping the atmosphere low-key and local allows Kurek to cater to specific needs of the community. Her store carries an official Boise State University cookbook with 64 unique recipes, and of course blue and orange game day gear.

Kurek urges people to keep small shops in mind when heading out the door to take on holiday shopping.
