President Barack Obama asked Iranian President Rouhani for the safe return of Boise pastor Saeed Abedini. This week marked one year in captivity for Abedini, who was convicted of spreading Christianity in Iran.
Earlier this year, the Iranian court system sentenced Abedini to eight years in prison. Since he was sentenced, Secretary of State John Kerry has made a plea on his behalf, but Friday was the first time President Obama got involved.
Abedini's wife, Naghmeh, was grateful for word of the president's involvement. Naghmeh said, "This is the most encouraging news I have heard since Saeed was imprisoned one year ago."
