Police look to expand use of body cameras

By Associated Press. CREATED Dec 16, 2013

BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Police departments in several southwestern Idaho cities are considering adding body cameras to officers' uniforms, a step already taken by the Nampa Police Department and the Canyon County Sheriff's Office.

The Idaho Statesman reports that the Ada County Sheriff's office and police departments in Boise, Meridian, Garden City and Caldwell are looking into the pager-sized body cameras, which are designed to record any encounter that could produce evidence in a criminal case.

Caldwell police Sgt. Joey Hoadley says the recordings serve as evidence for both prosecutors and defense attorneys.

The Canyon County Sheriff's Office began using the cameras about eight years ago. The digital recordings are downloaded into the county's computer server without the ability by deputies to delete or alter the recordings.
