A Kuna woman say she wants to become the next Ada County Coroner.

Dotti Owens announced her candidacy Saturday.

“The Ada County Coroner’s office needs to be led by someone with working knowledge of death investigation; someone with the qualifications required to maintain accreditations for the office in addition to having the compassion to professionally assist families in their utmost time of need,” Owen stated.

In a news release, Owens says she is a trained Medicolegal Death Investigator, registered through the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators.

For the past eight years, Owens has been certified in various areas of death and forensic investigation. She obtained her Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administrating with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Anthropology.

Owens says she has investigated over “a thousand deaths throughout (my) career, attended autopsies, completed death notifications to unsuspecting families, and (was) directly involved in the investigation and prosecution of homicide cases.”

Owens has worked in both the Twin Falls County and Ada County Coroner’s Offices.

She has since been employed as a Community Based Rehabilitation Specialist with Idaho Behavior Health.

Owens says both Ada County Sheriff Gary Raney and retiring Ada County Coroner Erwin Sonnenberg endorse her candidacy.

In Owens’ news release, Sonnenberg states, “Not only have I seen quality and reliable investigations, but she also has the leadership and management experience necessary to run this office.”

Raney is quoted as saying, “Law enforcement and the people of Ada County need a coroner with integrity and experience – a person who builds trust and collaboration. Dotti Owens is unquestionably the right candidate to be our next Ada County Coroner.”

Owens, a Democrat, will challenge Republican Matthew Townsend in the November election.

Owens lives in Kuna with her husband and four children.
