Downtown Meridian is kicking off Christmas with a decorating contest.
Harvest Church is one group hoping to win the contest, and members are pulling out all the stops.
"The mayor called and said 'hey will you do us a favor and spice up your side of the building and bring the heat in the competition' so we thought we would," said Jonathan Bryan, the youth pastor at Harvest.
The church is one of the brighter buildings in the competition, but the owner of a cat boarding home thinks her creativity gives her an edge.
"I wanted something to represent our business - what I do,” said Barbara Anderson of Calico Luxury Cat Boarding. “Traditional Christmas, I thought of Santa Clause pulling a sleigh and the reindeer, but I chose to do cats in place of it."
With so many businesses participating in the decorating contest, the entire main street is lit up. Despite not having any snow on the ground, it’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.
Winners of the contest will be decided by the public. The Meridian city website has a place for people to vote for their favorites.
"We put together events and sports leagues and community activities that bring people together and make our community a fun place to live,” said Colin Moss of the Meridian Parks and Recreation Department. “So that was really the whole idea behind it."
"It's fun, it's festive, it makes your building look great,” Anderson said. “When people are driving by you notice who's here and it's fun for everybody to see."

Voting begins Monday night and remains open through the week.
