Subway employees most underpaid in fast-food industry

You would think that if the word "artist" is in your job title, you might not have to worry about being underpaid.

That's not true for the "sandwich artists" employed by Subway. CNN Money has named Subway as the worst offender for underpaying its employees.

Between the years 2000 and 2013, Subway was investigated 1,100 times for violations of pay and hour rules, according to CNN. And they were found guilty a lot. In fact, more than 17,000 times. That resulted in Subway having to pay employees more than $3.8 million over the years.

It's usually McDonald's that gets the bad press for not paying its employees enough to live on. But before you start thinking McDonald's employees don't have it so bad, that company is the next most frequent wage violator, along with Dunkin' Donuts.

A sandwich artist at Subway averages $7.25 per hour.

It should be noted that Subway is now the biggest fast-food company with more than 26,000 locations across the country, and about double that if you count the worldwide stores.

Subway has declined to comment on the study.
