The oldest Alpine ski medal recipient, Bode Miller, 36, was unexpectedly brought to tears during an interview with NBC's Christin Cooper after being asked a string of back-to-back questions about his late brother, Celone, 29, who went by the name "Chilly."
Miller is seen getting teary early in the interview, but it isn't until Cooper asks, "When you’re looking up in the sky at the start, we see you there, and it just looks like you’re talking to somebody. What’s going on there?” that Miller is overwhelmed with emotion, and slumps against a fence. Later, however, Miller took to Twitter to stick up for the reporter.
My emotions were very raw, she asked the questions that every interviewer would have, pushing is part of it, she wasn't trying to cause pain.— Bode Miller (@MillerBode) February 17, 2014
According to Access Hollywood the Internet fumed as "Miller was a trending topic on Twitter in the United States for much of the day after the tweet and critics said the interview was insensitive. Richard Sandomir of The New York Times called it 'overkill,' Kami Mattioli of the Sporting News said Cooper 'repeatedly badgered' Miller and the AP’s David Bauder called it 'a shameful spectacle.'"
"I don't think there was any harm intended," said Miller to Matt Lauer on "Today." "It was just a lot of emotion for me. It's been a lot over the past year. You sometimes don't realize how much you can contain that stuff until the dam breaks, and then it's just a real outpouring."
Miller has not only made Olympics history by being the oldest, but also has accumulating more medals than any other U.S. skier. He won a bronze medal Sunday in the Alpine Skiing Men's Super-G. His last two scheduled events in Sochi are slalom and giant slalom.
