Multi-Oscar winning British actor-director Richard Attenborough has died at 90 years old. The official cause of death remains unconfirmed at this time, but had been living in a nursing home and confined to a wheelchair for several years, according to the BBC.

Attenborough spent an estimated 20 years attempting to make his most prized film, "Gandhi," which was finally released in 1982. Awarded Best Director (Attenborough) and Best Picture, "Ghandi" reaped eight Academy Awards in total.

"Attenborough began his career as a classically-trained English actor and went on to star in such films as 'The Great Escape,' 'Jurassic Park' and a remake of 'Miracle on 34th Street,'" reports CNN. "He was knighted in 1976."

"Attenborough's marriage to actress Sheila Sim spanned seven decades and produced three children," CNN further reports.

He would have turned 91 on Friday.
