Salpointe linebacker Taylor Powell commits to Nevada
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV)- Salpointe Football continues to prepare players for the next level. The 6'1 215 pound linebacker Taylor Powell is the latest Lancer to commit to a college program. Powell made his announcement on Friday afternoon via Twitter:
"I have officially committed to the University of Nevada blessed to part of the wolf pack family #Pack."
In 2013, Powell helped lead the Lancers to a state championship. As a junior, Powell averaged 11.5 tackles a game, had 21 tackles for loss, caused five fumbles and had five sacks. He also pulled in two interceptions.
Fresno State and Colorado State also made an offer to Powell. Other colleges that had light interest in Powell were Arizona and ASU.
Powell will be back at Salpointe for his senior season and on top of playing linebacker he is expected to be the team's top running back.
The defending state champion Lancers open the season four weeks from today at home against Sierra Vista Buena. Salpointe has won 23 of its last 24 games.
