TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) It will be tough for Salpointe to improve in 2014. The Divsion two state champions outscored opponents 697-101 in 2013.

Gone is star wide receiver, defensive back, and returner Cam Denson, who will play this season at the University of Arizona. Quarterback Andrew Cota will play for Colorado Mesa, and Jay Williams is at Brown.

"We can be right back where we were last year," said Lancers defensive end Jaylynn Juan. "We definitely have all the talent. Not as much talent but we have a lot of hard working guys and we're all up for it.

Down in Sahuarita, the Mustangs open play in week zero when they host Division four state champion Blue Ridge.

Sahuarita has a girl on this  year's team. Maddie Arbogast, a defensive lineman, will likely play junior varsity.

"It's fun they're all really nice they treat me like one of them so I don't feel like an outcast, she told Kayla Anderson.  "it's great. it's pretty exciting pretty nerve racking. I'm just really pumped."
