Willcox horse starves to death, but others saved in time

By Simone Del Rosario. CREATED Oct 28, 2013 - UPDATED: Oct 28, 2013

WILLCOX, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - Sick -- starved -- abandoned: Several horses in Southern Arizona are left in the desert to die.

One horse rescue organization, Healing Hearts, is just hoping to get there in time.

It was too late for Bravo, rescued last week along with his companion, Hero. Bravo died less than two days after reaching the refuge. But it's not all bad news.

Deputies seized Casper and Bones three months ago from a property near Mescal, Ariz. Now at the Healing Hearts refuge, both horses are unrecognizable.

"When we first got [Bones], his hair was so coarse and dry. Now if you feel him he's really soft. I know you don't think it's the same horse, but it is," said ranch manager Lynn Ismond.

She has rehabbed the two horses from skin and bones to meat and muscle. At the time, Ismond said it was the worst case of animal cruelty she had ever seen.

But that was before Bravo and Hero. Abandoned by their owner, she said the tenants on the property didn't feed them and didn't call for help.

"It makes me mad that they didn't do anything. These horses could have been helped far sooner than they were and it was too late for Bravo."

Now she watches Hero cling on and hopes it's not too late for him. If you would like to donate to Healing Hearts to save Hero and other horses, go here
