TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - After meeting for hours behind closed doors, Sun Tran has put another offer on the table and teamsters have agreed to extend the contract just 24 hours.
But will the extra time be enough? Members will have six meeting times where they can vote on the new offer.
The last offer presented was Saturday, and members rejected it 262 to 79. If members reject this new offer, teamster Andy Marshall says there is no doubt they will have exhausted all of their options and plan to strike.
A strike would disrupt the lives of thousands of bus riders as early as Friday morning, so for union members it's the last thing they want.
"It doesn't help our employees -- our members -- it doesn't help anybody who depends on the transit system so we'll do everything we can to make sure it doesn't happen," said union officer Andy Marshall.
The union says it's not all about money but wages are a big part of it. The union says drivers' pay has been frozen for years.
Before the freeze, a driver would start out at $13.30/hour and after four years, they would top out at around $18/hour.
Since the pay progression has been frozen, however, the only raise drivers have seen in the last several years is 19 cents.
Unfreezing pay progression was a hard line for the union over the weekend.
"That is still my position, but obviously if the city is taking a hard line that they're not going to have any flexibility whatsoever, we're going to do our part to see to it that the citizens of Tucson don't have their transit disrupted," Marshall said.
But if a deal is not reached and drivers go on strike, these are the routes that will still run -- only on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m:
Route 3: 6th Street/Wilmot
Route 4: Speedway
Route 6: S. Park Avenue/N. 1st Avenue
Route 8: Broadway/S. 6th Avenue
Route 11: Alvernon
Route 16: 12th Avenue/Oracle
Sun Link, Sun Shuttle, Sun Van and Downtown Loop will still run as scheduled.
