TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - You can only call Susan Scherl, well, a different breed of woman.
"I wanted to do something more meaningful with my life," Susan told 9OYS. "It's a very special place."
A place called Hope Animal Shelter, Tucson's ONLY no-kill shelter for dogs and cats.
It's a home for about 100 cats and dogs, brought to you by donations, Susan's maxed out credit cards, and her refinanced home.
"Somebody has to do it."
Of course, somebody has to get Gizmo the dog walking again, after having to get one of his legs amputated.
Somebody has to help Isabella the cat eat, after slowly being weaned off her feeding tube.
But, that somebody could soon turn into nobody, and it's happening right now.
"Well, I'm actually in the process of looking in our bank account," Susan said while typing on her computer.
She told us the shelter's checking account is at it's lowest point ever. Rent, Susan said, is about $3,000/month. Food, another couple thousand. Cat litter, another $500. The shelter also spays, neuters, and microchips their pets. On top of all that, their veterinary expenses are almost another $10,000.
Susan is scared, she said, that some of her animals won't survive without a no-kill shelter like hers. If she loses the shelter, she would either have to find homes for all of her animals, or give them to other shelters that don't have a no-kill policy.
Susan's is a shelter she needs YOU to save.
"It's all that matters...just helping these souls."
YOU can help by donating on their website, bringing food and/or blankets to their shelter, or donating through "Arizona Gives Day".
