Weekend storm brings 30-foot Saguaro crashing down, among other damage

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A Green Valley couple had quite the mess to clean up Monday after this weekend's storm.

Heavy rain and wind on Saturday brought down a 30-foot Saguaro onto a carport. The homeowner tells 9 On Your Side, it happened at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, damaging the home, two cars and a golf cart. But luckily, no injuries.

The couple says they are waiting to hear back from their insurance company to find out if the damage will be covered.

The National Weather Service reports more than an inch of rain fell in Green Valley, with wind gusts reaching 50 miles per hour.

In Tucson, Chris Rowland says his tire blew out after he drove through a huge pothole filled with water near Broadway and Houghton.

"I was just making a turn into the Chevron gas station and boom," he said. "You know, the car dropped into the thing and my kids started screaming."

Rowland says the pothole left a softball sized hole in his tire.

"The thing was probably about 20 inches deep in some places, maybe a little more," said Rowland. "There was no way of telling, it was filled with water."

Danya Goodwill sent 9 On Your Side photos of the pothole Saturday night after her tire was damaged as well.

A city official says crews went out Sunday to patch up the pothole.

Heavy winds also took one Tucsonan's shed to the swimming pool. Nine On Your Side Viewer Chris sent a photo saying Saturday's wind gusts picked up his shed and dropped it in a neighbor's yard two houses down.
