TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Abused and neglected horses got a little extra love Saturday.
Volunteers went out to the Wild Hearts Rescue Ranch in Marana. Besides giving the beautiful horses lots of attention, the group also shoveled sand into their pens.
It is a pretty lofty job that owner Jessica Gray says has to be done every year.
"Our volunteers shoveled ten tons of sand today. We had a huge group so it wasn't too brutal on just a few people," said Gray. "We're most grateful for the volunteer effort. We got a week's worth of work done in a day."
The horses at Wild Hearts have all been rescued from abusive homes, where some were beaten and others left to starve.
But the Rescue Ranch takes them in, rehabilitates them, and then adopts them out to new, loving homes.
