Valencia, Houghton busy with road work

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - There's a lot of work underway to help two of our busiest streets carry even more traffic.
Valencia will become three lanes each way for a faster smoother run to I-10 or the airport.
People trying to see the planes here at Pima Air and Space Museum say the hassles getting here are minor at worst.

Things are moving fairly fast in the work to widen Valencia....
Workers are expanding the road to six lanes, smoothing the dirt and sculpting concrete.
Along Valencia the main impact for now is for Pima Air and Space Museum.  But Mary Emich from the museum says attendance is up.

"A lot of people are staying away from the construction area. They're going up on the highway so the time when the tourists are coming here to be running smoothly."
The construction company has also been doing a good job of helping museum visitors get in and out.
Drivers told us even with construction they had an easy time getting to the museum, but sometimes construction can be frustrating wherever it is, even if they know streets will be better when it's done.

Viviana Pineda says, "It is hard to remember that.  At that moment you don't really care what the ending will be.  You just want to go to  your place not be stuck there for hours or minutes in traffic."
The Valencia project should be done in about a year and a half.

Houghton is another major connection to I-10 getting a major widening.
Some sections like Broadway to 22nd are scheduled to complete later this summer.
The overall stretch from Tanque Verde to I-10 should finish in 2016.
There's a lot more to the Valencia project than widening alone.  The project adds drainage improvements, bike paths and widens a bridge over the railroad tracks.
