Vendor sells safety to cyclists and pedestrians

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Maria Tadeo says she got tired of hearing about so many accidents on Tucson streets.

"I just heard pedestrian after pedestrian after cyclist being hit, being killed," she said.

According to Tucson Police, in 2013, 20 pedestrians died after being hit by cars. That's more than double the number killed in 2012.

Seventy percent of those accidents happened after sunset.

Tadeo's own daughter was even hit by a car, but survived. After that, she says she wanted to create something easy to wear but would make pedestrians and cyclists more visible at night, and so the V-Spot was born.

"It's super light weight," said Tadeo. "The only weight on it is a nine volt battery."

The V-Spot has reflective straps and two strips of LED lights.  Leaanne Weigel bought one at the fair saying she jogs every day.

"I do a lot of my jogging at 5 in the morning," she said. "So it is dark and I mean, I don't want to be a statistic."

Tadeo says her math background helped engineer the product, that's only a month old. The fourth avenue street fair is her first event.

"It's not about being a millionaire it's about saving one life at a time," she said. "If money comes in the process that's great, but if we can save one more cyclist, runner, biker hiker or just the average person that goes to and from work."
