Reid Park Zoo welcomes new lion cubs

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV)- The Reid Park Zoo has some brand new members! Their female lion "Kaya" gave birth to five lion cubs on December 23.
Unfortunately, one of the babies died the next day, leaving three males and one female cat. All four of them are gaining weight, but zoo officials worry about one of the boys, who they claim looks weaker than the others.
"A litter of five cubs is unusual," Zoo Veterinarian Alexis Moreno said. "It would be a challenge for five cubs to thrive - and we are monitoring the health of the remaining four offspring closely - it is still a large litter. I am cautiously optimistic at this point."
This is apparently Kaya's second litter of cubs at Reid Park Zoo. She delivered three cubs in July 2011 and those lions are now grown and living in other accredited zoos, according to a press release.
