'One was crying'; Two women attacked, find help at rural gas station

By Maggie Vespa. CREATED Dec 24, 2013

VAIL (KGUN9-TV) - Two women, alone on a dark, desert road were suddenly forced to fight for their lives.

It happened near Colossal Cave Road and Mary Ann Cleveland Way in Vail.
Both women are okay, but deputies hope their story serves as a warning.
Those steps, which started as a walk to Walgreens, ended at a nearby gas station where the two women fled to safety.
The attendent on duty knew immediately something wasn't right, and he spoke exclusively to 9OYS.
Even in this rural area they had strength in numbers.
"I would like to think that, that probably helped," said Deputy Courtney Rodriguez of the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Still, around 1:40 Monday morning their attacker didn't care that it was two on one.
"He actually grabbed both of the females.  Luckily they were able to fight him off," she said.
The women, ages 19 and 20, found help nearby at this lonely gas station.
"I figured they were calling 9-1-1," said employee Michael Meyers.
Meyers was working the graveyard shift Monday.
The women didn't say much to him.  They didn't have to.
"One was crying.  One was upset," he said.  "Mainly they were just sitting here at the tables, going in and out, talking to the sheriff."
Now, investigators are hunting for their attacker, a man that used his rural surroundings to his advantage.
"With the lack of visibility, a lot of remote areas where somebody could be hiding.  So there's a lot of variables out there that can make it a little bit more dangerous," said Dep. Rodriguez.
As for Meyers, he's never seen anything like this, but he knows his nocturnal hours also present a big risk.
"I know the risk of doing this," he said.  "I can't really think about it.  I'd never get nothing done."
The women describe their attacker as a Hispanic male, around 20 years old.
They say he was roughly 5'10" with short, brown hair.  He wore a hoodie and skinny jeans.
They say he may have an injury from that fight.
Anyone with information is asked to call 9-1-1 or 88-CRIME.
