Neighbor called 911, looked after girls while police searched home

By Rikki Mitchell. CREATED Nov 27, 2013

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Philip says his neighbors were secretive and he didn't even know children lived there.

"So it all sorta makes sense in retrospect now what took place there," says Phillip, who asked us to only use his first name and not show his face on camera.

Phillip lives next door to the home where police say three girls were imprisoned for at least two years.

He says he was woken up yesterday at 4 a.m. because two young girls were banging on his door and window, and ringing the doorbell.

He says the girls were frantic, saying their stepfather had a knife and was trying to break down their bedroom door. They told Phillip they escaped through a window.

When police arrived, they asked Philip to look after the girls while officers searched the home. Phillip says they were distraught and unkempt, but eventually started to relax.

They told Phillip they missed going to school, and said they hadn't been to school in more than two years. They were trying to remember what grade they would be in.

"They were telling us the subjects they liked in school and they were looking at our books and said 'oh we wish we would have known you earlier, you could help us with our reading,'" said Phillip.

He said he noticed in the past that the couple would play loud music when they would leave the home, but Phillip didn't think anything of it at the time.

"So we understand that the music was intended to keep the children in the condition they were in," said Phillip.

He said eventually the girls began talking about things that any normal teenager would talk about.

"Considering what had happened... they were quite vivacious young girls," said Phillip. "They exhibited very strong determination and courage for themselves... but they were very poised under these conditions."
