Most stolen vehicles in America and Tucson

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The Cadillac Escalade has topped the Highway Loss Data Institute's list for most vehicles stolen for about a decade.

This summer, the Ford F-250 roared in to shatter that record; it's now No. 1.

These new numbers make Tucsonans wonder if their vehicles make the list.

"It's not mine, is it?" Stan Spears asked.

Spears drives a GMC Sierra truck. Unfortunately for him, his truck does make the list: It's No. 8. But Spears won't be trading it in anytime soon.

"If it gets stolen, that's what you have insurance for," Spears said. "You try to prevent it as much as you can but it's not going to sway what I buy."

Spears grabbed his belongings and locked up his truck. But some go the extra mile to keep thieves away.

"Even though any car is not totally theft proof, I feel that [my club] is a pretty good deterrent. It would take them a while to get this club off," Nancy Moritz said.

Moritz may need the extra deterrent. Her Honda Civic doesn't top the national list, but in Tucson, it's No. 2, right behind the Honda Accord. This information comes from a 2012 Tucson Police list.

"It's always on my mind that someone could take it," Moritz said. "A quick trip to the grocery store: I always use my club."

Tucsonans have some ideas as to what drivers are doing wrong.

"They leave their vehicle unlocked or they leave it running while they run into a store to grab something," Wanda Smith said. "I don't do that; My truck's locked."

It's a good thing, because Smith's Dodge Ram is No. 6 on Tucson's most stolen list.
