SIERRA VISTA (KGUN9-TV) - We love Arizona for the beautiful landscapes, awesome weather and rich culture, but turns out it's bad for your marriage!
A new study out lists Arizona as having one of the highest divorce rates in the country, and locally the bad news doesn't stop there.
It's a bitter battle that, turns out, is strikingly common in Arizona.
"Faithfulness is one of the biggest ones," said Tucson divorce attorney Steven C. Weinstein.
Weinstein says the cause could be a mixed bag.
"Financial problems... Drug and alcohol abuse," he listed.
But that's true anywhere. Why is Arizona's rate, at 11 to 13 of every 1,000 people, so high?
Weinstein doesn't know but says, given the local economy, he's surprised.
"Business is down," he said. "Divorce business is down."
Or maybe it's just miles out of reach.
Arizona's divorce rate isn't the only local standout on that map.
Statistics show the city of Sierra Vista has the second highest divorce rate in the country.
"The divorce was final last year," said Cheryl Renfrow.
She thinks source of her hometown's divorce syndrome is simple.
"Military has a higher divorce rate than non-military," she said.
"Fort Huachuca to you, no doubt?" asked 9OYS reporter Maggie Vespa.
"Yeah," she said.
Most we spoke to agreed.
"Maybe because of Fort Huachuca? There's lots of young soldiers," said one woman.
Others weren't so sure.
"Probably because of lack of things to do," said another. "Maybe you're stuck at home all the time and start to bicker."
The military factor seems to be the consensus.
The 'American Community Survey' group, who compiled these numbers along with the Daily Beast, didn't list influencing factors behind these numbers.
The city with the highest divorce rate is Panama City, Florida.
