Investigation into officer use of force sent to DPS
Tucson Police deployed with helmets and batons, but only felt they needed to arrest one man: a 25 year old caught throwing a beer bottle
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The Tucson Police Department has referred the investigation of Sgt. Joel Mann to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The initial incident occurred during a unlawful assembly at the intersection of University Boulevard and Tyndall Avenue on March 29.
Sgt. Mann's investigation will be conducted by DPS and presented to the Attorney General’s Office in regards to any potential criminal action, said Lt. Chris Wildblood with Tucson Police.
Police are continuing to review the evidence which includes videos, photographs, statements and reports.
A Board of Inquiry has been convened which consists of several TPD members of various ranks, and representatives from both the Independent Police Auditor’s Office and Tucson City Attorney’s Office, said Wildblood.
The Board will be chaired by Deputy Chief Sharon Allen who is currently the Interim Director of the
Tucson Convention Center. She was not involved with any of the planning or operational events on that evening.
The review process by the board could take several months to prepare and complete, said Wildblood. Any pending and future external complaints will be investigated and reviewed by our Office of Internal Affairs for administrative purposes.
