Tucson illegal 'lipo' suspects arraigned in court

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) -  The Tucson pair, accused of performing illegal medical procedures out of a home on Tucson's northwest side, were arraigned in Pima County Superior Court, Friday.

On June 28, the Pima County Sheriff's Department arrested and charged Gustavo Nunez, 51, on two counts of practicing medicine without a license. Deputies also arrested Ilda Garcia, 40, with one count of practicing medicine without a license.

According to the official search warrant obtained by Nine On Your Side, on June 27 Nunez brought one of his patients to an area emergency room. She was in a coma. A friend of the patients admitted to deputies they had previously gone to Nunez and Garcia for liposuction and earlier that day, the friend had dropped the woman off at Nunez' home for another procedure. An attorney representing the Arizona Attorney General's Office says the woman is currently in a vegetative state.

The couple's names may sound familiar. In August 2013 special agents with the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration arrested and charged both Nunez and Garcia on felony charges including possession of dangerous drugs and practicing without a license. During the three-month investigation, DEA agents say they uncovered evidence Nunez and Garcia were performing illegal medical procedures, including liposuction and breast augmentation, at his Tucson clinic, NuTec. Agents say two female patients suffered severe complications in light of the illegal procedures. Additional charges were later filed.

Nunez and Garcia are being held without bond. They will be back in court in September.
