TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - An anonymous viewer alerted 9 On Your Side to a massive amount of tar dumped in the desert.
It was found east of Houghton off of Valencia. The viewer said it had been there for about three weeks.
The spill is still spreading, engulfing cactus, garbage and anything else in its path. A cow was lying dead and decomposing in the tar.
Mark Shaffer with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality said they sent crews out to the site, and they issued a request for the tar's removal.
Bill Boyd with the State Land Department said they then went and took a sample of the tar. Boyd said they need to analyze the sample to determine if it is hazardous and the best way to take care of it.
TPD said they did not have any reports of illegal dumping in that area.
The dumped tar is close to the area of Houghton that was recently being re-paved. Public Information Officer for the city Mike Graham said he will contact the crew the city contracted for the project to see if it was them who dropped the tar there.
