MARANA, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - A firefighter has fallen and his community continues to step up and help. That community shattered the goal it set Friday to assist the family the firefighter left behind.
Hundreds turned out at Culver’s in Marana, where 20 percent of the restaurant’s profits went to the family of William “Billy” Warneke. He’s one of the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots who died in the Yarnell Hill Fire in late June.
Firefighters from six local departments joined with kids and others to also collect cash for Warneke’s family. His wife is expecting the couple’s first child later this year.
“I think the whole community -- all their hearts go out to this family,” one firefighter said.
The line at the drive-through wrapped around the block at one point, and the line at the restaurant often went out the door.
Organizers set a goal of raising $10,000. They ended up collecting more than $23,000 for the Warneke family.
