Federal court rules state can deny driver's licenses to immigrants
PHOENIX (AP) - A judge has rejected a request to block Arizona's policy of denying driver's licenses to some young immigrants while Gov. Jan Brewer asks an appeals court to reconsider a ruling that she can't deny driving privileges to the immigrants.
U.S. District Judge David Campbell says the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals' ruling that ordered him to issue a preliminary injunction blocking Brewer's policy isn't yet final because the governor is asking the appeals court to reconsider its July 7 decision.
The challenge to Brewer's policy was filed on behalf of young immigrants who have gotten work permits and avoided deportation under an Obama administration policy.
Brewer issued an executive order directing state agencies to deny licenses and other public benefits to young immigrants who get work authorization under the program.
