TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A fundraiser to revitalize a Tucson dog park in memory of a young dog lover was very successful.
The family of Austin Fitzgerald, a Catalina Foothills High School graduate who died of acute lung failure in December, held an event to raise money to re-model the dog area at Brandi Fenton Memorial Park Saturday.
The event featured an agility course, games and splash pools for the pups, and vendors, food trucks and a silent auction for the owners.
Jennifer Smith, Austin's mother, said she was very happy with the turn-out and thankful to the Tucson community for their support.
"He would have loved to be here. I have to assume he's wherever he is looking down having just a heart of gold and grandness about it," said Smith.
The money raised at the event was sent to the Parks and Recreation Department for counting, so no total was available Saturday night. However, Smith said she checked the donations page on fitzgeraldfoundation.com/ and three donors had contributed $20,000 together.
Smith said the family needs to raise $50,000 for the first phase of the project.
