Deer Head fire rages on, producing smoke visible from Tucson
The Deer Head Fire burns in the Rincons.
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The Deer Head Fire in the Rincon Mountains in Saguaro National Park has grown to 939 acres, and has produced a column of smoke that should be visible from Tucson throughout the day.
Crews, including 30 firefighters, are managing the lightning-caused blaze the way they would a controlled burn, with the goal to preserve natural resources by ridding the forest of underbrush.
The crews are directing the fire away from important areas, such as the historic Manning Camp. They are also staging burnouts to keep the fire east of Heartbreak Ridge.
