TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A group of immigrant rights activists blocked a bus filled with detainees headed to criminal court on Friday morning. Those detainees were heading to the Federal courthouse to be tried for entering the U.S. without authorization.
The immigrant rights activists were also protesting outside the federal courthouse.
Protesters stopped a Department of Corrections bus headed to Operation Streamline, a federal criminal court where detainees are tried en masse for entering the country illegally.
Immigrant rights activists were protesting for several hours before police made arrests and the demonstrations dispersed.
The Tucson court convicts an average of 80-100 people every weekday for unauthorized entry into the U.S. and protesters claim defendants are denied fair representation and due process of law.
