NOGALES, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - Border Patrol agents seized nearly 235 pounds of marijuana and arrested one individual after foiling an illicit cross-border smuggling attempt through a tunnel.

Agents discovered the incomplete cross-border tunnel on August 7.

After observing freshly disturbed dirt and rocks, authorities discovered a water-filled tunnel approximately 100 yards west of the DeConcini Port of Entry.

The tunnel extended 42 feet into the United States, measured 2.5 feet wide by 3 feet tall, and was equipped with electrical wiring and ventilation pipes.

Agents found sugar sacks used to carry excess dirt out of the tunnel and located several tools.

On August 13, agents arrested one individual attempting to smuggle 10 bundles of marijuana, worth an estimated $117,000, through the tunnel.

Agents will continue to monitor tunnel activity and conduct daily inspections until remediation is complete.

The drugs will be turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
